Boogie
Woogie as a style of music and a type of dancing was not invented by
dance schools or music producers. It is a social dance with afro
american roots, it was feeling and idea, a mixture of everything of
former decades. There are elements of tap dance, aerials, hopping,
hip shaking, dirty dancing and rubber legs. Not to forget the
rhythm very close to the heart beat when you are speeding up.
Due to the music style there
are step structures of 6 and 8 counts. As Rock'n'Roll too Boogie
Woogie Dance belongs to the group of swing dances which are combined
with Jazz, R'n'B, a little bit of everything influencing each other
from the start up to now. Invented in the US during the 1930ies it
also came to Europe and to Germany before the second world war. A
renewal wave came over by GIs since the 1940ies and especially by
the Bill Haley movie 'Rock around the clock' in 1956. Twist and Beat
followed. Elvis and other artists came back in the 1970ies and since
then latest Rock'n'Roll is back in style.
The diagram
below shows - sorry, only in german - the development of swing
dances.
